Power system study and protection settings

Importance of power system studies in protection

Load flow studies
The load flow studies are used to find out the Real and reactive power , load currents and voltages , losses under normal operating conditions as well as under any expected contingencies. We have the normal current , minimum current , maximum current as well as similar information about the voltage as well as frequency etc after a load flow study is conducted . This information can be used for the basis for setting of various relays .
As an example if Two parallel transformer are feeding a load , the over current settings can be set above the setting of normal individual load of combined transformer so that ,overload tripping of the healthy transformer can be avoided for a short time in case of parallel transformer tripping. In this case the thermal setting can be used to give alarm or trip of the healthy transformer. As the thermal overload is a gradual process, the operator get the time to act on the alternatives to avoid the complete shut down .

Short circuit Study

The short circuit study can be used to find out the maximum and minimum short circuit current that for different type of faults that ocures in the system . The short circuit current magnitude includes the subtransient , transient and steady state magnitude of the current. This information is very much essential for the protection Engineer to set the Relay properly . Also the diamensioning of the current transformer is another area where the
information about the maximum as well as the minimum short circuit current information is required ( to be continued)

  1. Your Blog shares a valuable information about Relay coordination and Short circuit study. It is very helpfull to detect the problems in faults occur. The timing of device operation is verified using time current characteristics or TCCs, the device response curves plotted on log-log graph paper. The devices have inverse time current characteristics ITCCs. They operate quickly for large magnitude over currents, and more slowly for lower-magnitude over currents. Operating time is plotted on the vertical axis and Operating time is plotted on the vertical axis, and current magnitude is plotted on the horizontal scale. we are one of the top most Electrical hazard safety assessment consultants in the world.we provide services like Arc Flash Analysis, Short Circuit Analysis, Harmonic analysis, Relay coordination, etc, ....If you have any queries, Click on Relay coordination <\a>

  2. Thanks for your provocative remarks, you had shared valuable information about In power system networks, protection has to be designed such that protective relays isolate the faulted portion of the network, to prevent equipment damage, injury to operators and to ensure minimum system disruption enabling continuity of service to healthy portion of the network. To know more Relay Coordination
